Applications Open for Aspiring Software Developers
Mayden Academy opens its doors for a second intake
Bath, 7 June, 2016—Mayden Academy announced today that applications are now being accepted for aspiring software developers to begin training at the end of August 2016.
Now in its second year, Mayden Academy is an innovative and intensive 16-week training programme for individuals with little or no prior coding knowledge. It aims to plug the gap between the theory that is learned in formal education and the practical work experience that employers seek, in order to ready students for their first position as a junior software developer.
The Academy teaches the fundamentals of coding, software design and project management using the latest technologies, under the guidance of experts and mentors. Individuals gain hands-on experience, working with a team on a variety of development projects.
Having opened its doors in June 2015, Mayden Academy had a very successful first year, with all six trainees graduating from the programme and going on to accept positions at Mayden. Four of the trainees achieved Zend Certified Engineer status, an industry-wide standard that recognises PHP expertise and is a measure of distinction used by employers to evaluate prospective employees.
Academy graduate and junior developer Charlie said, “I had tried teaching myself to code in my spare time and found it hard to progress – my experiences throughout this programme have proven that there is no substitute for diving right in. The Academy gave me the tools and the confidence to work in a developer role.”
The opportunity will appeal to ambitious, driven individuals looking to fast track their entry to a career in software development, perhaps following their A levels, after college or university, or as a career change. The Academy welcomes applications from graduates of non-computer science subjects, as well from individuals with computer science degrees who are seeking to gain practical experience.
“Across the country, demand for software engineers continues to grow,” explained Chris May, founder of Mayden. “Last year, the Bath and Bristol area was identified as the second largest tech hub outside London. There’s stiff competition locally amongst employers for the best developers. We want to contribute our expertise and experience to help retain and grow developer talent for the area. We’ve been very pleased with the calibre of the graduates coming out of the Academy, and look forward to taking the programme forward.”
There are eight positions available on this year’s 16-week course. Fees are £8,000, with a merit-based opportunity for two trainees to be hired by Mayden for the period of the course, receiving an employee salary, with the cost of their training being met by Mayden.
